  • In 1990, special legislation supported by the Nevada congressional delegation changed the status of the Red Rock Recreation Lands to the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. While Red Rock is only 17 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip, it is a world away in entertainment. The area encompasses 198,000 acres within the Mojave Desert and provides a 13-mile scenic drive and more than 30 miles of hiking trails. The Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center offers information about recreation opportunities, wildlife, wild horses and burros, vegetation, geology and cultural resources.
  • Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area became Nevada’s newest conservation Area on November 6, 2002. Sloan Canyon is located approximately 15 miles south of Las Vegas.  It contains the northern portion of the McCullough Range, which is volcanic in origin. The peaks are rounded and have a steep eastern escarpment and a gradual western slope. Elevations span from 2,000 feet at the eastern base of the range to 5,092 feet at Black Mountain. The area consists of a creosote bush community with barrel cactus, Joshua trees, cholla and prickly pear.
