Event Accomplishments

  • 02/13/10 – Placer Cove Clean-up and Eco Dive - NPS
    32 volunteers (12 of which were divers) donated 128 hours of labor collecting 2500 pounds of trash and debris (52 bags of trash and 40 buckets of glass) from Placer Cove. Two Law Enforcement Rangers and one maintenance staff and two maintenance volunteers also helped make the event a success.
  • 02/06/10 - Fence Restoration - NPS
    9 volunteers from the UNLV pre-health professionals’ club donated 36 hours of labor to erect two hundred feet of fence to keep Off Highway Vehicles from a sensitive cultural area.  In addition and despite the continuing rain, the volunteers also did a cursory check of the area for trash and removed 75 pounds of debris. 
  • 2/4/10 - Bailey Middle School Great Unconformity Field Trip
    42 Bailey MS students and teachers removed 10 cubic yards of trash during an educational field trip to the Great Unconformity.
  • 1/30/10 - Lovell Canyon Route Restoration #1
    10 volunteers contributed 60 hours restoring routes within the Rainbow Mt. Wilderness. Volunteers restored over 4000 sqare feet of wilderness. A special thanks goes out to the Friends of Nevada Wilderness, Mt Charleston License Plate Program, The Nevada Community Foundation, REI, and Friends of the Forest
  • 1/16/10 - Lovell Canyon Clean-Up #2
    33 volunteers contributed 259 hours restoring part of Rainbow Mt. Wilderness. Volunteers removed: 12 buckets of glass, 1 broken chair, 43 bags of trash, 2 TV sets, and 3 sheets of OSB panels and other construction materials. A special thanks goes out to the Friends of Nevada Wilderness and the Mt Charleston License Plate Program
  • 1/6/10 - Lovell Canyon Clean-Up #1
    16 volunteers contributed 127 hours restoring part of Lovell Canyon Rainbow Mt. Wilderness. Volunteers restored 2 campsites and removed: 17 buckets of glass, 1 couch, and 2 water coolers. A special thanks goes out to the Friends of Nevada Wilderness, Mt Charleston License Plate Program, Friends of the Forest, Nevada Community Foundation, REI for their support
  • 12/19/09 - Bird Count - Red Rock NCA
    13 volunteers covered eleven sites within the NCA and accounted for forty-five species with a total of 308 individual birds sighted and identified
  • 12/18/09 - Bird Count – Ash Meadows
    17 volunteers accounted for 75 species, with a total of approximately 4320 birds sighted and identified The highlight was an apparent male YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER outside the refuge boundary, but within the count circle, in adjacent Amargosa Valley.
  • 12/3/09 - Bailey Middle School Great Unconformity Field Trip
    60 Bailey MS students and 3 SNAP Education Specialists removed 2 cubic yards of trash during an educational field trip to the Great Unconformity
  • 12/8/09 - Mocassin Rd Clean-Up
    15 volunteers, including Cadwallder MS National Junior Honor Society members, Bechers MS Go Green club members removed 140 cu. yards of debris. Items included couches, landscape debris, televisions, and other household furniture.
  • 11/21 BLM – Duck Creek Detention Basin Clean-Up
    26 volunteers, including Southern Highlands community members, Desert Oasis Band members and their teacher, and other valley residents removed approximately 120 cubic yards of debris from the Duck Creek Detention Basin area. GON would like to extend a special thank you to Par 3 landscaping for their donation of heavy equipment and operators.
  • 11/21 NPS - St. Thomas Litter Clean-Up
    30 volunteers removed 900 pounds of garbage from the St. Thomas
  • 11/14 NPS - Callville Bay Clean-up and Eco Dive
    137 volunteers removed 40 cubic yards of trash and garbage from the Callville Bay area of Lake Mead
  • 11/14 BLM - Kiwanis Club, Red Rock NCA Clean-Up
    21 volunteers, including Kiwanis club members and other valley residents removed 28 yards of debris from vacant BLM land located adjacent to the La Madre Equestrian Park trails.
  • 10/24 BLM Make a Difference Day – Red Rock More than 430 volunteers completed 22 designated projects on Make –A-Difference day including; tree plantings, graffiti removal, painting (curbs, sidewalks, and bathrooms), seed ball making, invasive species removal, vegetation trimming, fence repair/removal, rebuilt steps and retaining walls, sanded and sealed boardwalks, trail rehabilitation and delineation, and repairs to Oliver Ranch (removed concrete waste, raked and cleaned meadow, trimmed tree overgrowth, removed non-functional electrical wiring, and removed hazardous fencing).
  • 10/17 Summerlin Hughes Clean Up
     More than 200 valley residents, including the Hughes Corporation and private contractors, volunteered their time and equipment to one of the largest clean-up efforts organized by a private entity.  More than   325 tons of abandoned furniture, landscape waste, construction spoils and trash were removed from more than 200 acres of public and private land during the Summerlin Desert Clean-up event.

  • Sloan Canyon Clean Up - 10/26/09- Junior Master Gardeners, Community Members, & SNAP Education team members removed 28 cubic yards of debris from Sloan Canyon in Henderson
  • N. Hollywood and Alto Clean Up- 10/3/09
    4 volunteers removed 35 cubic yards of debris from the north east area of town. Items included a boat, 5 couches, landscape debris, televisions, and other household furniture.
  • Bailey Middle School Great Unconformity Field Trip- 10/8/09
    24 students, 3 SNAP Education Specialists removed 2 cubic yards of trash during an educational field trip to the Great Unconformity
  • 2nd N. Hollywood and Alto Clean Up- 10/16/09
    41 volunteers, including staff from Windemere Realty, continued clean up efforts from earlier this month by removing 35 cubic yards of debris from the “hard hit” area of N. Hollywood and Alto
  • Sandy Valley Clean Up - 10/17/09
    30 volunteers, (15 of those volunteers were members of Pahrump Valley 4 Wheelers who traveled from Pahrump to participate in this event) removed 238 cubic yards of trash and debris
  • NPS Make a Difference Day - 6 Mile Cove - 10/24/09- 15 adults and 3 children, including the UNLV Burmese Students Association removed 48 bags of trash and 4 buckets of glass from the beach area
  • NPLD Wetland Restoration Project ABV- 09/26/09- 6 volunteers completed the NPLD wetlands restoration project at the Alan Bible Visitor Center.
  • NPLD Jean Dry Lake Bed Clean-Up- 9/26/09- Boy Scout troop 949, Jackrabbits OHV club, Nevada Rangers, and other community members cleaned 3 shoot sites around the Jean Dry Lake Bed Area, efforts removed approx. 47 cubic yards of debris (hot tubs, televisions, computer components, mattresses, etc.).
  • NPLD Friends of Red Rock- 9/26/09- 46 adults, 21 children, and 4 BLM staff – eliminated 10 unauthorized OHV routes. Eradication efforts covered approximately 1.5 miles. Two youth groups and several adult groups collected trash from multiple areas, filling a large Republic Services dumpster with building refuse, parts of a boat, bedsprings, computer components and a great deal of trash.
  • NPLD NPS Boulder Harbor Clean-Up- 9/26/09- 94 volunteers, the NPS Park Superintendent, Volunteer Program Staff, and Park Service Maintenance personnel picked up 18 cubic yards of trash and debris from the area, plus 1200 lbs of glass.
  • NPLD USFWS Ash Meadows Planting- 9/26/09- 24 volunteers planted approximately 500 Alkali sacaton plants.
  • NPLD Friends of Gold Butte- 9/26/09- 40 volunteers planted 50 Creosote and Mormon Tea seedlings; transplanted 30 Barrel Cacti and Beavertail Cacti; built a 300 foot hiking trail; and installed 300 feet of split rail fence around a new parking area at the trail head. Upon completion 3 members of the Moapa Band of Paiutes were in attendance to bless the project.
  • Desert Oasis HS Clean-Up 09/25/09- Approximately 137 high school students joined forces with the BLM and removed 75 cubic yards of debris from the desert areas surrounding their high school.
  • CTA Clean-Up- 9/19/09- 23 volunteers (UNLV pre health science club and community members) removed 85 cubic yards of debris, including construction debris, household furniture, landscape debris, etc.
  • NPLD Lee Meadows Seed Collection- 9/12/09- 28 volunteers (Junior Master Gardeners, UNLV service group, and others) collected 6 lbs. of wax currant (Ribes cereum)and 1.5 lbs. of nodding brome (Bromus anomalus).
  • Spring Mountain Clean –Up- 9/12/09- 19 volunteers assisted in removing 800 lbs of trash.
  • Ant Safari-08/15/09- 26 citizen scientists crawled all over Mount Charleston continuing earlier efforts to locate the Charleston Ant. Scientists left with many specimens to take back to the lab for further analysis.
  • Spring Mountain Clean-Up- 8/8/09- 29 volunteers assisted in removing 150 lbs of trash.
  • 2009 National Award Winners- 07/17/09- Congratulations to the Great Unconformity Community Sponsorship initiated by Dr. William H. “Bob” Bailey Middle School and Liliam Hickey Elementary School! They have been selected as a national Take Pride in America award winner. The award nomination form highlighted the amazing accomplishments of this program: Three hundred and eighty-two students from Dr. William H. “Bob” Bailey Middle School and Liliam L. Hickey Elementary School joined Don’t Trash Nevada volunteers, parents, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers, UNLV, Citizens for Active Management (CAM), The Bureau of Land Management, and Touro University Occupational Therapy students in removing trash, repairing trails, and cleaning graffiti from rocks.  This year marked the first year that all agencies came together to sponsor the site and hold clean-up events on 7 different dates from September, 2008 through April, 2009.  This year, the project was fully funded by Bailey Middle School student-generated funds and cooperating community agencies. Students raised money for the program by sponsoring a dance, selling shaved ice, and participating in the school-wide Cherrydale fundraiser.
  • Spring Mountain Clean-Up- 7/11/09- 33 volunteers assisted in removing 63 bags of trash.
  • N. Red Rock Canyon Clean-Up- 06/20/09- 11 volunteers and a group of professional surveyors removed 28 cubic yards of debris from the Lucky Strike area of Red Rock Canyon.
  • Lovell Canyon Clean Up- 06/20/09- 12 volunteers including 1 local community member, 1 target shooter, 5 UNLV Circle K Club Members, and 5 UNLV sorority members (KΔX) were joined by 10 interagency Law Enforcement personnel at Lovell Canyon in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area. They  removed 20 cubic yards of shot up debris including TV’s, stuffed animals, signs, etc. 1 volunteer collected 6 – 33 gallon trash bags of recyclable plastic.
  • Northwest Desert Clean-Up -06/13/09- 23 volunteers removed 76 cubic yards from a 12 block radius at the first ever Northwest Neighborhood Cleanup, Restoration & Preservation Day. The collaborative effort between the nonprofit group Citizens of the Northwest, Clark County, BLM, Public Lands Institute and Republic Services was a big success. Jan Valentino, the event organizer, gratefully acknowledged the efforts of these dedicated partners: “A very special thank you to Clark County Commissioner Larry Brown for his support and his many hours of "hands on" help today as well as to Kim Bush and Carrie Delatorre of Clark County who tenaciously brought this to fruition as well as for their enthusiastic participation today. Deepest thanks also to the hardworking employees of BLM, Republic Services, Don't Trash Nevada and the Public Lands Institute along with the wonderful volunteers who signed up via Get Outdoors Nevada!
  • Conservation Transfer Area Clean-Up- 05/30/09- 5 local community members saw the hard work of 11 volunteers, including 3 Boy Scouts, and spontaneously joined in to clean up the Conservation Transfer Area. 56 yards of debris ranging from construction and landscape materials to couches and tires were removed.
  • Desert Clean-Up Sloan Canyon- 05/23/09- 9 volunteers continued clean-up efforts at Sloan Canyon and removed 36 yards of debris (construction, landscape, general trash, etc.). Also, BLM law enforcement was onsite and issued 2 citations to individuals driving in a restricted area.
  • Spring Cleaning- 05/09/09- 267 volunteers cleaned up 16 recreation sites during the Spring Mountains Spring Cleaning event. They cleaned up a total of 4310 pounds of litter. In addition to the sense of satisfaction they received from their stewardship efforts, they enjoyed a barbeque with music, art and educational activities.
  • Red Rock- Seed Ball- 05/9/2009- 14 adults and 9 children made approximately 2,500 seed balls at the Red Rock Canyon overlook. Some have already been dispersed on disturbances in the Gold Butte area, and the others will be distributed over the next couple of months on tortoise habitat in Piute Valley and other Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACECs). Restoration scientists will be monitoring the disturbances to see how successful the seed balls are and invite any volunteers interested in joining the monitoring efforts to contact the Get Outdoors Nevada team.
  • Clean the Rock- 05/02/09- 7 volunteers removed 20 yards of trash from The Rock, an off road site at Desert National Wildlife Refuge complex.
  • NPLD- The Great Unconformity Area- 04/27/09- 15 volunteers from the public joined 45 Bailey Middle School volunteers and Mojave Max to celebrate National Public Lands Day a little early. They removed 28 cubic yards of trash from the Great Unconformity area.
  • Earth Day Liter Clean-Up- 04/25/09-13 members of the UNLV Office of Information Technology and 2 Bureau of Land Management law enforcement rangers removed 28 cubic yards of trash, construction debris, and household waste from 3 separate washes in Sloan Canyon. These washes are now fenced off, thus limiting future illegal dumping.
  • Earth Day Green Road Clean-Up- 04/22/09- 14 volunteers from the public and 79 students from Mannion Middle School removed 56 cubic yards of construction debris, household furniture, and a hot tub from the Sloan Canyon area. Mojave Max was there to teach the children about the importance of a clean ecosystem.
  • Earth Day Invasive Weed Removal- 04/17/09- 6 volunteers cleared an area approximately 20’x40’ of the invasive weed Bur Buttercup at the Spring Mountains to celebrate Earth day.
  • Great American Clean Up- Lake Mead- 04/04/09- 122 volunteers cleaned one square mile of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, removing 43 cubic yards of trash.
  • Red Rock Day- 03/28/09- 43 volunteers removed 10 cubic yards of trash, repaired a gate, mended a fence and removed dangerous rope swings from Wheeler Camp Springs at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
  • National Park America Tour- 03/28/09- In four hours, 326 National Parks America Tour volunteers improved 50 tree wells, removed 6 cubic yards of rocks from the picnic areas, raked and removed 65 cubic yards of leaves, oleander limbs, palm fronds, and litter from the surrounding area. In total, volunteers donate over 1,304 hours to the National Park Service which is valued at $25,441.00. The hard work and esprit de corps displayed by all volunteers made the event a huge success.
  • Placer Cove Clean-Up- 02/21/09- A group from UNLV's AED fraternity along with other members of the public (a total of 23 people) contributed 69 hours of volunteer time and cleaned up 7 cubic yards of waste in Placer Cove at Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
  • Bunkerville Clean-Up- 02/21/09- More than 15 people contributed 75 hours of volunteer time to help clean up a Bureau of Land Management site in Bunkerville, Nevada.
  • Ash Meadows- 01/24/09- 35 people volunteered and improved a 670 foot stretch of the outflow of Kings Pool in Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. In the end, one and a half dump-truck loads, roughly 15 cubic yards, of cattail leaves were cut and hauled away in a little over two hours.
  • Bailey Middle School- 01/22/09- 47 middle school students and seventeen elementary students from Bailey Middle School picked up 15 cubic yards of trash at the Great Unconformity on Frenchman’s Mountain, Bureau of Land Management area.
  • Bailey Middle School continued their fabulous work at the Great Unconformity, picking up trash while learning about the fascinating geology of the area.

Training Highlights

  • Desert Tortoise Training- 09/16/09- 4 volunteers attended the training held in REI in Henderson.
  • GPS 101- 09/8/09- 3 volunteers attended the GPS 101 training offered in REI in Boca Park.
  • Bus Tour 2009- 05/22/09- 24 volunteers attended the bus tour and all enjoyed learning about the natural and cultural history of the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area and the Desert National Wildlife Refuge.
  • First Aid & CPR Training- 05/09/09- 13 volunteers updated their first aid and CPR skills at the Lake Mead Water Safety Center thanks to the energetic instructor from Medic 1.
  • Bird Training- 04/16/09- 2 volunteers took advantage of a marvelous opportunity to learn about birds from Ranger Cribbs. Reports were that they saw wonderful waterfowl and a few rare species at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve.
  • Graffiti Removal- 03/21/09-13 volunteers are all set to assist Ranger Cribbs in graffiti removal after attending his training session at Red Rock Canyon.
  • Volunteer Orientation- 03/19/09- 4 volunteers know all about the Interagency Volunteer Program after they successfully found the location of the Volunteer Orientation Training.
  • Native Plant Training & Wildflower Hike- 3/14/09- 14 volunteers participated in the training to learn about  Native Plants and participate in a Wildflower hike.
  • How to Succeed with Volunteers 03/04-05/09-14 rangers from all four of the agencies in the Southern Nevada Agency Partnership improved their knowledge, skills and abilities in working with volunteers by attending the “How to Succeed with Volunteers” training that the Interagency Volunteer Program.
  • First Aid & CPR Training- 02/14/09-15 volunteers can respond to emergencies a little bit better after receiving first aid and CPR training at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
  • Wildflower Training- 02/14/09-14 volunteers enjoyed Valentine’s Day by attending a wildflower hike with Joey Betzler, president of the local Native Plant Society.
