Ant Safari
Friday, July 17th and/or Saturday, July 25th and/or Saturday, August 15th
11 am
Audience: All ages are welcome
Location: Kyle Canyon
Agency: USFS
Volunteer Work Type: Ant inventory
To commemorate the 55th anniversary of the discovery of the Charleston ant, the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area will be conducting a Charleston Ant Safari. The goal of this effort is to recollect the Charleston ant, determine its current habitat and distribution, and better understand the life history of this species. The Charleston ant, Lassius nevadensis, is a small ant known only from Kyle Canyon in the Spring Mountains. It was collected by Dr. A. C. Cole on July 23rd, 1954 and the description of this new species of Lassius was published in 1956. No one has seen or collected the Charleston ant since that July day in 1954. As part of the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area’s ongoing efforts to understand and protect the many endemic species of the Spring Mountains, the Charleston Ant Safari will commemorate the 55th anniversary of the discovery of the Charleston ant with an intensive effort to re-locate and collect this elusive species.
The SMNRA is seeking volunteers to assist with the search for the Charleston ant. We will conduct three group searches on July 17th, July 25th, and August 15th. The searches will begin with a short training session held at 11:00 am in Kyle Canyon (exact location TBD). Following the training session, we will search likely areas of Kyle Canyon for mating flights of the Charleston ant. All collection materials and information on the Charleston ant, along with light refreshments will be provided at the training sessions. The highlight of the safari will be the 1st annual Charleston Ant Picnic to be held at 11:30 am on July 25th on Mt. Charleston. Ant lovers of all ages are invited to participate in the collection efforts and, of course, to attend the Charleston Ant Picnic. For additional information and to RSVP for the search efforts and picnic, contact Amy Nichols at 702-515-5421.

Adopt-A-Cove
A commitment of at least 3 times per year
Audience: Groups and individuals of all ages
Location: Lake Mead National Recreation Area
Agency: NPS
Volunteer Work Type: Clean-up and stewardship
Lake Mead National Recreation Area’s Adopt-A-Cove Program gives people in our local communities the opportunity to become a park steward while enjoying a day at the Lake. Being the eyes and ears for the park demonstrates to visitors and residents alike that you care about our National Park. With the changing water levels, the need for your help is greater than ever before. This program has helped improve the appearance of our shorelines and without volunteers this would not be possible.
Anyone can Adopt-A-Cove! Maintaining our shorelines improves human health and safety, wildlife habitat, and the beautiful scenery at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Adopting a cove is an easy, team-building project that takes only a few hours while contributing back to your community. You are asked to clean your adopted area just three times per year and report back to the park how much litter and debris you collected and other safety issues that you may discover. There are a number of potential coves that need to be adopted; some even accessible by land. Coves are adopted on a first come first serve basis.
Beginning is easy, simply call Lake Mead National Recreation Area’s Volunteer Program Office at (702) 293-8711or visit www.nps.gov/lame/supportyourpark for more information.
Please note: Start time for all events includes a 30 minute check –in period. All volunteers under the age of 18 must provide a signed parental approval form.
Please sign up for our mailing list to be notified of future events.
